Licorice

Licorice is a perennial plant native to China, particularly in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The most useful and valuable species of Licorice in China is found mainly in the Hang Jin Qi Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which this is the area in where Green Global operates. In Inner Mongolia, Licorice is planted during spring and autumn when the weather and soil conditions are optimal. The root will then mature over a period of three years after which it will be ready for harvesting. As of year 2007, the group has planted and cultivated 8,000 mu (~533 hectares) of Licorice. Encouraged by the excellent results in 2007, the group now aims to increase the Licorice plantation size to 50,000 mu (~3,300 hectares) in 2008.

Why Licorice?

Licorice is an essential ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also used in a diverse range of products including food, candies, cosmetics and other health products. Due to the commercial value of Licorice, its demand has been increasing steadily for the last 5 years. The resulting illegal farming of Licorice and harvesting of wild roots has accelerated the desertification problem in Inner Mongolia. Local and national government entities are supportive of private sector involvement in land management and conservation efforts in order to prevent unlawful and ecologically harmful practices.

The Licorice plant can withstand the harsh conditions of desert areas and is effective in preventing desertification. The Licorice root penetrates deep into the soil, holding the layers together, and prevents soil erosion.

Organized, large-scale cultivation of Licorice will ensure Licorice buyers a stable supply of high quality Licorice roots, while assisting the land preservation and anti-desertification effort.
